Fender width is measured on the outside of the fender, not the inside channel. That means the usable clearance for your tire is smaller than the printed number, so the 8–12 mm buffer isn’t optional — it’s the safety margin that keeps mud and pebbles from jamming between tire and fender.
How to Measure Your Tire Width
Start by reading the sidewall of your tire. You’ll find two numbers: the wheel diameter and the tire width. Common examples include 700×38c (road and gravel), 26×2.1″ (mountain), and 27.5″ or 29″ wheels with widths in the 2.0–2.4-inch range.
The first number is the wheel size; the second is the tire width. That second number is your baseline. Add 8–12 mm to it and you have your target fender width.

Check the fork crown width and height on the front, plus the seatstay bridge spacing on the rear — these are the standard pinch points. Also look behind the chainstay bridge, where the chain can hit a very wide fender in the smallest gears. Why Fenders Can Still Rub After Sizing
The sidewall number is only a starting point. Tire brands differ in actual measured width, and rim width, inflation pressure, and frame shape all shift the real clearance. A tire labeled 38c might measure 40 mm on a wide rim, which eats into your buffer.
