Measuring the Opening Before You Buy

If your opening falls outside that range, a gate that is too narrow leaves dangerous gaps, while one that is too wide will not mount securely. Do not improvise. For angled or oddly shaped walls, you may need a specialized solution; a baby gate for angled walls requires different mounting hardware than a standard flat opening.
Installing a Hardware-Mounted Gate at the Top of Stairs
Hardware-mounted gates provide the permanent, load-bearing security that stair-top installations demand.
- Hold the gate in position and mark the screw holes with a pencil.
- Use a stud finder to locate wall studs near both marks; screws must anchor into structural framing, not drywall alone.
- Drill pilot holes, then drive the provided screws into the studs with a drill or screwdriver.
- Attach the gate’s mounting brackets to the wall, then click or slide the gate into place per the manufacturer’s directions.
- Test the latch mechanism. The gate should open and close smoothly with a secure lock, and the panel should not wobble, shift, or detach under firm pressure.
When mounting into drywall alone is the only option, use heavy-duty drywall anchors rated for the gate’s weight and the force a child can apply, though anchoring into studs remains the safer choice.
Once installed, the gate’s hardware handles the real load. The success state is straightforward: a firmly anchored gate that holds its position when you lean on it is doing its job.
Installing a Pressure-Mounted Gate
Pressure-mounted gates rely on tension, so proper alignment is everything.
- Position the gate in the opening and adjust its width until the pressure pads contact both surfaces evenly.
- Tighten the locking mechanism per the instructions, alternating sides so the gate stays level.
- Twist or push the gate to verify it does not rotate or slide when pressure is applied from either direction.
Pressure-mounted gates can be moved and reused easily, which makes them convenient, but the joints and tension can loosen over time. Recheck the lock, tension, and alignment regularly as your child grows and uses the gate more often.
Common Mistakes That Compromise Safety
- Using a pressure-mounted gate at the top of stairs. This is the single most dangerous error, as the gate can pop free under a child’s weight.
- Screwing into drywall only. Without studs, the hardware can pull loose under repeated force.
- Extending a gate beyond its intended configuration. This may affect compliance with ASTM F1004 and create an unstable fit.
- Skipping the instructions. Gaps, poor latch engagement, and instability all trace back to installation shortcuts.
The ASTM F1004-22 standard is the current version required by CPSC for gates and enclosures manufactured after January 21, 2023.
