Using a document feeder to scan is straightforward: load pages face up, aligned to the guides, then select Document Feeder in your scan software and press Scan.
The automatic document feeder, or ADF, is the tray on top of a scanner or multifunction printer that pulls in a stack of pages one by one. It turns a tedious single-sheet scanning session into a two-minute job, but only if you load the stack correctly. Get the orientation wrong or overload the tray, and you’re staring at a paper jam or a scan of blank pages.

Loading The Document Feeder Correctly

- Place pages face up in the feeder on Canon devices, with the top edge going in first.
- Slide the guides snug against the paper so it feeds straight.
- Keep the stack within the load limit — usually marked with an icon on the tray.
Canon’s feeder instructions specify that the side to be scanned faces up. Epson’s guidance matches this: align the guides to the document, insert the stack until it meets resistance, and keep the scan side facing up. Some software may expect a different orientation, so when in doubt, check the quick start guide for your specific model.
Capacity varies by device. Canon supports up to 50 sheets on most models, but drops to 35 sheets on the MF246dn, MF237w, and MF235. Xerox’s single-pass duplex ADF holds roughly 130 sheets of 80 g/m² paper. Exceeding the limit can stop the feeder mid-stack or cause a jam.
Starting The Scan In Your Software
Once the pages are loaded, the scan itself is a matter of picking the right feeder mode in your scan application or driver.
On Windows, the scanner driver exposes the feeder’s capabilities, including whether it supports duplex and its optical resolution. Your scan app reads those fields and shows the available options. In Canon’s Network ScanGear, you switch the scanner online, choose Feeder (1-sided), Feeder (2-sided), or Feeder (Hi-Speed 2-sided), set the page orientation to match how you loaded the originals, and click Scan.
Epson recommends Office Mode for documents scanned through the ADF. This mode produces clean, readable text files without the larger file sizes of a photo-quality scan.
For Mac users, the path runs through System Settings > Printers & Scanners > Open Scanner, then select Use Document Feeder. If your scanner supports two-sided scanning, a Duplex checkbox appears, and you can check it before clicking Scan.
Scanning Two-Sided Documents (Duplex)
Duplex scanning means the feeder captures both sides of each page, either in one pass or by flipping the page internally. Everything depends on whether your scanner actually supports it.
Apple’s documentation is direct: the Duplex option depends on scanner capabilities and may not be available on every model. If you don’t see the checkbox, your feeder is single-sided, and you’ll need to flip the stack manually and scan the back sides as a separate batch.
Xerox’s single-pass duplex ADF scans both sides of a two-sided original at the same time, which is nearly twice as fast as a feeder that flips the page. Canon’s Network ScanGear offers both standard and high-speed duplex options, and the high-speed version pulls both sides in a single pass on compatible hardware.
Even a single-pass duplex scanner has limits. Xerox’s ADF supports original paper weights from 38 to 128 g/m² and sizes from 85 x 125 mm to 297 x 432 mm. Feed anything outside that range and the scanner may refuse to pull it or misfeed mid-job.
Avoiding The Most Common ADF Mistakes
Most feeder problems trace back to three avoidable errors. Here’s what trips people up, and how to steer around each one.
- Mixing paper sizes. Canon warns never to load different sizes in the same stack. Align the guides to the widest page and smaller pages will feed crooked. Sort mixed-size originals into separate batches.
- Opening the feeder mid-scan. Epson warns that opening the ADF during a scan triggers an option error and stops paper feeding. Let the job finish before touching the feeder.
- Loading pages that need different settings. Every page in the feeder shares the same scan settings. Apple’s guidance is clear: if some pages need color and others grayscale, split them into separate groups and scan each with its own settings.
After the scan finishes, Canon says to remove the documents from beneath the feeder promptly. Leaving a finished stack in the tray invites a jam on the next job.
One more tip: for a preview workflow, Epson recommends loading only the first page for the preview scan, then reloading that page with the rest of the stack before the final scan. This keeps the preview fast and accurate.
