Touchscreen pens split into two families, and the difference shows up the moment a drawing app opens: does the nib need power and pairing, or does it respond as soon as it touches glass? Powered models are active styluses; everything else is capacitive. Once you understand what is a capacitive stylus — and what it isn’t — the choice between the two stops being confusing.

A capacitive stylus is a pen-shaped tool with a conductive tip that behaves like a fingertip on the glass. It holds no battery, pairs with nothing, and needs no driver. That’s why the category is called passive: the pen is inert, and the screen reads it exactly as it reads your bare finger.

How a Capacitive Stylus Works

Capacitive touchscreens read changes in a faint electrostatic field spread across the glass. Skin is conductive, so a fingertip distorts that field at one spot, and the screen’s controller interprets the distortion as a touch. A conductive stylus tip produces the same distortion, which is why the pen needs no power source and no chip of its own.

Tips are made from conductive materials — woven fiber, silicone, or conductive rubber composites — and they pass your body’s natural capacitance through to the screen. There is no setup and no compatibility list to check. The pen works on any capacitive touchscreen, from phones and tablets to touchscreen laptops. It simply does nothing on a non-touch display, because there’s no touch sensor to interact with.

What a Capacitive Stylus Can’t Do

A passive stylus cannot sense pressure, tilt, or hover, and it cannot reject your palm. It sends the device zero data — it’s only a conductor. Those features require an active stylus with electronics inside that communicate with the screen or operating system.   • No pressure or tilt. Every stroke registers the same way, so drawing apps can’t vary line weight based on how hard you press.
  • No palm rejection. The screen can’t tell a resting palm from the pen tip, because both are just conductive contact.
  • No hover cursor. An active pen can be detected before it touches the glass; a capacitive pen can’t.

Active pens solve those problems, but they bring their own limits. Most pair over Bluetooth and work only with apps that support a specific stylus protocol and with specific tablet models — often from a certain year or newer. That’s why “capacitive” should never be read as a synonym for “smart”: in most product listings, it simply means the pen is unpowered.
