What Are The Control Methods In Just Dance?
Three exist today: motion controllers, the smartphone Just Dance Controller app, and camera-based Camera Controller mode on newer editions. Each is tied to specific hardware and editions.
On Nintendo Switch and Switch Lite, Joy-Con motion control is fully supported, including Just Dance 2026 Edition. Ubisoft described one scoring option as using Switch controllers exclusively for Switch and Switch 2 owners, so the console handles tracking without a phone.
PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S have no packed-in motion controller; they rely on the Just Dance Controller app for the 2023, 2024, 2025, and 2026 Editions. The app scores your moves and navigates menus.
How Does The Just Dance Controller App Work?
The app turns your phone into a motion sensor—you hold it while you dance, and it transmits movement to the console game. It is not a standalone game.
Compatibility is narrow: the current listing says it works exclusively with Just Dance 2023, 2024, 2025, and 2026 Editions on Nintendo Switch, Switch Lite, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5. Older editions on older consoles are out of scope. On iPhone, the App Store states “Only for iPhone” and requires iOS 14.4 or later; older phones or iOS versions can’t install it—the most common reason players can’t start.

How Does The Camera Controller Mode Work?
Camera Controller mode uses your phone’s camera as a full-body motion recognition tool, so you dance hands-free. Ubisoft says the camera detects your movements and compares them to the coach choreography—the higher the similarity, the higher your score.
It arrived on a staggered schedule: beta in Just Dance 2025 Edition, official launch in Just Dance 2026 Edition.
The biggest limitation is structural: Camera Controller is for solo players only—no group mode. Support isn’t universal across the song library; at beta launch, players had to erase and re-download compatible songs from the console, finding supported tracks via an in-game icon or sorting in the Songs tab.
Ubisoft’s January 2026 pricing update said Camera Controller would reach Just Dance 2023 and 2024 Edition maps joining Just Dance+, using the Just Dance Controller app on iOS and Android—widening reach beyond the iOS-only beta.

Just Dance+ is Ubisoft’s in-game subscription unlocking extra songs, sold inside the game. Ubisoft’s pricing page lists it in-game on Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 5. The subscription list also matters for Camera Controller, since the 2023 and 2024 Edition maps joining Just Dance+ gain camera scoring.
Does The Just Dance Controller App Work Without A Console?
No. It’s a controller, not a game, and needs a compatible console running a supported edition—2023, 2024, 2025, or 2026 Editions on Switch, Switch Lite, Xbox Series X|S, or PlayStation 5. Without one, there’s nothing to connect to.
Can Multiple People Use Camera Controller At Once?
No. It’s for a single dancer; the camera tracks one body at a time. For groups, use the Just Dance Controller app, which supports up to 6 players on a supported console.
Why Is A Song Not Scoring With My Camera?
Camera scoring isn’t on every track, so unsupported songs won’t register your body. Ubisoft’s beta guidance: erase and re-download songs from the console to enable camera compatibility, and find supported maps via the in-game icon or Songs tab sorting.
