Keeping chickens hydrated is the most repetitive chore on a small farm, which is why so many keepers switch from open pans to a nipple-based system. A typical DIY build uses a short length of PVC pipe, a handful of nipple drinkers, and a garden hose connection. The payoff is cleaner water, fewer spills, and a setup you fill by turning a valve instead of hauling buckets. The build takes an afternoon, and the materials cost far less than a commercial unit.
What You Need for a PVC Nipple Waterer
You will also need a 3/8-inch drill bit, 3/4-inch end caps and adaptors, PVC cement, and a brass swivel GFT fitting to connect the pipe to a standard hose.
Before you buy anything, decide three things: your water source, your water pressure, and whether you want a gravity-fed or hose-fed system. A gravity bucket works without pressure regulation, while a hose-fed line needs a regulator to keep pressure inside safe limits.
Gather these parts before you start:
- 4-foot PVC pipe (3/4-inch diameter)
- 7 poultry nipples + rubber grommets
- 3/4-inch end caps and adaptors
- 3/8-inch drill bit and a drill
- PVC cement and Titeseal thread sealant
- Brass swivel GFT fitting for hose connection
How to Build the Line: Step-by-Step
Drill and Install the Nipples
Mark seven spots along the pipe, spacing them 6 inches apart. Drill a 3/8-inch hole at each mark, then push a grommet into each hole. Press the nipples firmly into the grommets until they seat flush. Use an installation helper tool if you are fitting horizontal nipples — it holds the nipple steady so you do not bend the pin.
Apply PVC cement to the end caps and adaptors before pressing them on, and use Titeseal on threaded fittings for a waterproof seal. Over-tightening is the most common leak source, so snug is enough.
Connect to a Water Source
Attach the brass swivel GFT fitting to one end of the pipe. If you are running a hose-fed system, connect a 30-inch hose of 3/4-inch diameter between the fitting and your garden hose, then attach a pressure regulator.
For a gravity system, skip the regulator and mount a 5-gallon bucket above the pipe with a short hose running down to the GFT fitting.
Mount at the Right Height
Suspend the pipe so the nipples sit at chicken head or neck height — poultry should be able to straighten their necks while drinking. For smaller breeds or young birds, place stepping stones underneath so they can reach.
Level and stabilize the unit before filling it, then adjust the valve or regulator so water flows without overflowing. Tap the nipples with your finger in front of the flock so they learn where the water is.
How Many Nipples and What Pressure?
Install a minimum of one nipple for every four chickens, or one for every three in a hot climate. Many side-mount guides recommend one nipple per five birds, while commercial operations run as high as one per eight to ten. For a backyard flock of a dozen birds, seven nipples on a 4-foot pipe is plenty.
Pressure is the compatibility factor most people get wrong. Too much pressure causes leaks at the grommets; too little leaves the nipples dribbling. If you are unsure about your household pressure, add an inline gauge before the regulator.
For a bucket-fed gravity system, pressure is dictated by the water level in the bucket. Keep the bucket no more than two feet above the nipples to avoid excessive flow.
