Caulking trim is one of those jobs where the gap between amateur and pro shows in every seam. The difference isn’t a steady hand—it’s doing the steps in the right order. Whether you’re sealing baseboards, door casings, or window trim, the same sequence delivers a clean, paintable joint that lasts years instead of cracking within a season. Prep the Joint First
Fresh caulk only bonds to a clean, dry surface. Skip this and you’ll be scraping it out in six months. Remove all old, cracked caulk with a putty knife or caulk remover tool. Scrape away dust, debris, and any loose paint chips along the joint. For greasy areas near kitchens or bathrooms, wipe the surface with a damp rag and let it dry completely.

Tool the Bead Immediately
Smoothing the bead is what separates a professional seam from a pile of caulk. Wet your finger (or a caulk tool) and run it along the bead in one smooth stroke, pressing firmly enough to fill the joint and leave a slightly concave surface. Do this right away—caulk starts to set within minutes, and once it skins over, tooling it tears the surface and leaves a mess.
