Start with the software’s system requirements: most engineering apps run best on a 64-bit Windows PC with a multi-core CPU, 16 GB of RAM, and an SSD.
For the full breakdown, see our best Computer For Engineering Software guide.
The processor is where workstation budgets go to die. An engineering app will happily ignore six of your cores while it chokes on 8 GB of memory and the wrong graphics driver.
Open the vendor’s system-requirements page for the exact release you plan to run before you open a single product listing. Autodesk and SOLIDWORKS publish requirements for every release, and those lists settle most of how to choose a computer for engineering software: the operating system, the memory ceiling, and which graphics cards count.
Should You Buy A Windows PC Or A Mac For Engineering Software?
Buy a 64-bit Windows PC unless your required app explicitly supports macOS, because Windows is the platform both vendors treat as the default and list requirements for first.
AutoCAD 2026 supports 64-bit Windows 11 and Windows 10. SOLIDWORKS 2025–2026 lists x86_64 hardware — Intel 64 or AMD64 — along with certified cards and drivers.
Macs can work, but the supported list is narrower and moves with each release. Both list 64-bit Intel and Apple M series processors. SOLIDWORKS does not appear
