Most first-time mistakes with inflatable hot tubs happen in the first ten minutes — picking a bad spot or overinflating the liner. Setting up an inflatable hot tub correctly is mostly about order: surface, inflation, plumbing, and water. The steps below follow the official guidance from Bestway Lay-Z-Spa and Intex PureSpa, the two biggest names in the category. You’ll be soaking by early evening if you follow them in sequence.

Pick The Surface Before You Unpack Anything

The site decision is the one you can’t undo easily. Intex PureSpa guidance says the spa may go outdoors or indoors, but only on a level area free of obstructions and sharp objects, with adequate drainage and access to a grounded outlet. Bestway’s Lay-Z-Spa materials agree on the flat, stable surface requirement.

Check three things before any other step:

• Level and clear — no rocks, twigs, or debris under the footprint.
• Drainage nearby — you’ll empty it eventually, and you don’t want that water flooding toward the house foundation.
• Grounded outlet within reach — Bestway’s instructions call for GFCI/RCD-protected power, and the cord length is a real site constraint. Extension cords defeat the protection.

Lay the ground cloth down first. It protects the liner from abrasion and adds a thin thermal break.

Inflate Until Firm, Then Connect The Pump

Inflation is where most people overdo it. Both Bestway and Intex explicitly say the spa should be firm to the touch but not hard, and not overinflated. The tub walls need to hold shape without stretching the seams tight.

Bestway’s Lay-Z-Spa sequence is to unfold the liner, confirm the inner spring valve is closed, connect the inflation hose, and inflate using the control pump until firm. Intex’s PureSpa guidance matches: connect the inflation hose, turn the hose to lock it in place, press the bubble button to inflate until firm, then press again to stop. For either brand, the general rule is about the same. If you go too far, the walls feel drum-tight and the seams are under visible strain.

Once inflated, remove the inflation hose and securely close the valve cap. Then connect the pump unit to the spa’s water inlet and outlet ports and install the filter cartridges. Make sure the bottom drain valve caps are securely closed before you even think about water.

Fill And Cover

Fill with a garden hose to between the minimum and maximum water lines marked on the inside wall. Intex says freshwater between the MIN and MAX marks; Bestway’s guidance points to the same labeled range. The gap between those lines matters because the water level affects the filter intake and the heater’s ability to circulate properly.

Cold tap water in a fresh tub will take a while to heat, so the ideal setup window is morning, not late evening. Once the level is right, place the cover over the tub and lock the buckles — Intex notes that the cover buckle locks with the key provided, and Bestway’s covers use the same secured-buckle approach. The cover locks in heat during the warm-up phase and keeps debris out.

What Not To Do

• Don’t overinflate. Firm, not hard — both brands say it plainly. Overinflated walls stress the seams and shorten the tub’s life.
• Don’t fill before checking the drain caps. A missing or loose cap turns your setup into a wet patio and a flooded pad.
• Don’t skip the ground cloth or place the spa on an uneven surface. The liner will find every sharp point underneath.
• Don’t use an ungrounded or unprotected outlet. Bestway requires GFCI/RCD-protected power; Intex calls for a grounded outlet. This is the one safety item that isn’t optional.
