The Pellet Base: What Forms The Structure

The pellet itself provides the bulk, texture, and absorbency. Most clumping pellet litters use one of four plant-based substrates as the primary ingredient, each offering different trade-offs in odor control, weight, and flushability.

Additives: Odor Control And Dust Management

Activated carbon and baking soda are common odor-fighting additives that trap volatile compounds. Some formulas add urease inhibitors, which block the bacterial conversion of urea into ammonia gas. For dust control, manufacturers add a light coating of mineral oil to the pellet surface—common in clumping wood formulas—to bind fine particles and keep them out of the air.

How Clumping Pellet Litter Behave Differently From Standard Pellets

This is where most buyer confusion happens. Standard pine pellets are 100% compressed pine shavings with no binding agents. When wet, they do not clump—they break down into sawdust. If you pour standard pine pellets into a standard litter box and try to scoop urine, you get a mess. Standard pine requires a sifting box that separates the sawdust from the intact pellets.
